Recently, Wimpie van der Merwe shared a simple story with me about a sunbird flying back and forth between a river and a forest fire, carrying tiny drops of water in its beak. The bird knew it could not put out the fire on its own. But it also knew the forest was its home, and that doing nothing was not an option.
That story stayed with me. Not because it is dramatic, but because it captures something true about the way meaningful things actually happen. Not through grand gestures or perfect conditions, but through consistent, purposeful action by people who have decided that their part matters.
What the FIA stands for
Every day, our members do work that is deeply practical and deeply human. They help people protect what they have built. They help businesses stay standing through uncertainty. They help families, employers, and communities hold onto stability when life becomes unpredictable.
That is not a small thing. It is a meaningful contribution to society. And yet, in a complex and demanding industry, it is easy to feel that one voice, one branch, or one business cannot really change much beyond its immediate clients.
The sunbird reminds us otherwise. Collective impact is built from individual acts of responsibility. Every membership contribution, every ethical standard upheld, every conversation that protects a client’s future, every branch initiative that strengthens a community, these are the drops of water that matter.
Introducing FIA Impact
Protection should not stop at the policy document. It should reach into the communities our members serve.

The FIA as an ecosystem
The deeper truth is that the FIA itself is also an ecosystem. It supports our members professionally, gives shape to our collective voice, and helps create the conditions for advisory businesses to thrive. In return, each of us has the opportunity and responsibility to contribute to the strength of that ecosystem.
FIA Impact gives us a powerful reminder that when we care for the wider environment in which we work and live, we strengthen the whole. Small branches acting locally. Members contributing professionally. Together, something larger takes shape.
A note of thanks
I want to thank Wimpie van der Merwe and the team at Global Choices for helping spark this initiative and for supporting it as sponsor and partner. Their commitment has helped turn an important idea into a practical movement. FIA Impact is an FIA initiative, but it would not be moving this quickly without that support.
Your invitation
As FIA Impact grows, my hope is that members across the country will see themselves in this story. You do not need to be a large firm or a prominent branch to contribute to the industry’s reputation and social impact. You simply need to decide that your part matters.
We may not solve every challenge on our own. But like the sunbird, we can still do our part. And when many people do that, something greater begins to happen.
More than a policy. A purpose.
