Here’s the media release about Murphy’s appointment:

Santam, South Africa’s largest general insurer is pleased to announce that Steve Murphy has been appointed as Head of Santam Reinsurance with effect from 1 April 2018.

Murphy joined Santam Re on 1 July 2011 as the business’s representative in South East Asia, initially out of Vietnam and later Singapore. He was instrumental in setting up and developing Santam Re’s activities and business in China, Korea and South East Asia, during which time this region has become a key contributor to the business’s premiums and earnings.

“Steve has a long and distinguished track record in reinsurance, including 18 years as the Chief Executive of Hannover Reinsurance South Africa. In this period, he transformed that business from the second smallest in South Africa to one of the larger reinsurers on the African continent,” said John Melville, Santam Executive Head of Risk Services.

“Steve has a passion for people and leadership. While he lived in South East Asia, he was also extensively involved in the transfer of insurance skills, leadership, strategic thinking, negotiation and change management. His team will take the business to the next level in the coming years,” he added.

Santam Re was formed in 2010 and is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Santam. The business underwrites proportional and non-proportional reinsurances treaties for property and casualty reinsurance lines. It has market representation in Africa and Asia.
