South Africa’s solar revolution is well underway. With load shedding having driven a surge in residential solar PV and battery storage installations across the country, many South Africans – including your clients – now own or are considering solar systems. But alongside the benefits comes a responsibility that too many homeowners are unaware of: legal compliance sits squarely with the system owner, not the installer.
The South African Insurance Association (SAIA), together with municipalities, industry bodies, insurers, financial institutions and fire protection organisations, has launched the national Safe Solar PV & Storage campaign – a timely initiative to ensure that residential solar systems are safe, properly registered, compliant with South Africa’s Electrical Installation Regulations, and fully insurable.
As intermediaries, your role in this conversation is critical. When a client’s solar installation is non-compliant, the consequences extend far beyond a failed inspection – they can include fire risk, property damage, and serious implications for insurance cover.
Over the coming weeks, FIA will be bringing you practical, accessible guidance drawn from the SAIA campaign. Here’s what to expect:
- Solar photovoltaics (PV) is about safety, compliance, and smart energy use – not just savings
- Solar safety matters: the dangers of unregistered or unsafe systems
- Legal responsibility: what the Electrical Installation Regulations require of homeowners
- Registering your system: how and why to register with Eskom or your municipality
- Choosing a qualified installer: why only a registered Installation Electrician (IE) or Master Installation Electrician (MIE) can legally certify your system
- 7Industry quality assurance: recognised programmes like PVGreenCard™ and the Association of Renewable Energy Practitioners (AREP) P4 accreditation explained
- Correct system sizing and installation safety checklists
- Certificates of Compliance, insurer notification, and financing considerations
Whether your clients are considering solar for the first time or already have a system installed, this series will equip you with the knowledge to guide them confidently – and to protect the cover they rely on you to secure.
Let’s make sure South Africa’s solar future is a safe one.
